Remote sensing for the study of terrestrial ecosystems: from theory to practical application

Remote sensing is increasingly being used in ecosystem research, as it offers the possibility of characterising continental surfaces exhaustively and frequently. Remote sensing is thus a powerful lever for generalising observations and results, designing experimental plans based on the spatio-temporal variability of ecosystems and developing innovations for their sustainable management.

The current context is particularly promising for the democratisation of the use of remote sensing. Space missions for Earth observation are making unprecedented progress, in particular with the ESA's Sentinel missions, which allow exhaustive, frequent (3-5 days) and high spatial resolution (10 m) mapping of ecosystem characteristics related to the development of vegetation cover, hydrological and biogeochemical cycles. The dissemination of these data is now facilitated by data hubs that offer access to pre-processed satellite products allowing users to focus on the parameters of the observed surfaces.

Objectives of the course

" Some basics to understand, an experience to get started..."

In order to promote the use of remote sensing by research infrastructures for experimentation and observation in the environment and more broadly in any research work on terrestrial ecosystems, the AnaEE France infrastructure is proposing a research school which will take place from September 27th to October 1st 2021 at the Lautaret Garden. The aim of this school is :

  • To present the physical basis of remote sensing observation in the different wavelength ranges in order to fully understand the nature of "observable" bio-geophysical variables.
  • To acquire operational skills in selecting, importing and manipulating remotely sensed image series.
  • To gain initial experience in implementing methods to access relevant characteristics of terrestrial ecosystems (habitat mapping, plant phenology, biophysical characteristics).

Who can apply ?

The school is aimed at doctoral students, post-docs, researchers and engineers interested in terrestrial ecosystems or agrosystems, who want to integrate remote sensing into their research work and who wish to have some basic knowledge to get started. The educational and accommodation costs will be covered, only the travel costs will be covered by the participants. Priority will be given to people at the beginning of their career and whose motivations are in line with the training.

The organising committee will ensure that the group is representative of the diversity of the target community.

We invite you to apply for participation via our online form.
